Ngalabi Short Film Festival 2024

Celebrating Short Films from Uganda and Beyond

Dates: 6th -8th September 2024

Goethe-Zentrum Kampala/Ugandan German Cultural Society is proud to present the 8th edition of the annual Ngalabi Short Film Festival.

The festival will be hosted at Circular Design Hub from 6th to 8th September 2024. There will be film screenings with intermittent Q&A sessions to allow the audience to further engage with film directors. Entry to all screenings and Q&A Sessions is free of charge.

Since its inception in 2017, the festival has been intrinsically committed to promoting and celebrating the short film genre as an art form in Sub-Saharan Africa.

This year’s edition will showcase 25 short films from Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, Egypt, Côte d’Ivoire, Namibia, Reunion Island, France, UK, Germany, Switzerland, Belgium, Hungary and Portugal.

The festival film catalogue boasts notable award-winners like Kizazi Moto: Generation Fire – ‘Herderboy’ by Raymond Malinga (Uganda), From Here To There by Remy Ryumugabe (Rwanda), Ethereality by Kantarama Gahigiri (Rwanda/Switzerland), An Ode To A Time I Loved Bread by Neema Ngelime (Tanzania/ Belgium/ Hungary/ Portugal),  Ward`s Henna Party by Morad Mostafa (Egypt) and  Indigo by Mona Okullo Obua (Uganda/Germany).

We welcome two films Sèt Lam by Vincent Fontano and Farewell, Friends by Lawrence Valin from Reunion Island for the very first time at Ngalabi.

We are thrilled to be the first premier stop in Africa for  Cut Me If You Can by Nicolas Polixene and Sylvain Loubet (France).

In this year’s submissions, we received a rise in animation, sci-fi, and magical realism genres alongside drama, thriller, fantasy, comedy, afro-surrealism, experimental, and documentary. The selected films highlight a range of thematic areas from loss, grief, identity, friendship, cultural identity, innovation, love & loneliness, to the influencer economy effects, and immigrant experiences.

“We are excited to celebrate a collection of vibrant and diverse stories from Africa and its diaspora that celebrate the best of cinema and its magical ability to connect us all. This festival is a tribute to all the powerful, creative voices that are shaping our industry today.” Joel Tugaineyo, Festival Curator
