OPEN CALL FOR APPLICATIONS

INTERPRETER: ENGLISH - TIGRINYA

The Goethe-Institut e. V. is the worldwide cultural institute of the Federal Republic of Germany. We promote the learning of the German language abroad and perpetuate international cultural cooperation. Moreover, we strive to paint a realistic picture of Germany through information about the cultural, societal and political life.

In the project Mein Weg Nach Deutschland – Living and Working in Germany of the Asylum, Migration and Integration Fund (AMIF) of the European Union, we support East Africans who are moving permanently to Germany to work there. We provide vital information and networks to facilitate the migration process. The integration begins in the country of origin. Our countries of focus are Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda and Burundi.

To support the project, we are looking for (an):
Interpreter / Verbal Translator for a one day engagement at the Goethe-Zentrum Kampala,
on 18th June, for a period of 3 hours.

Tasks and Responsibilities

Interpreter (English → Tigrinya):

1. Provide real-time interpretation
Deliver accurate and fluent simultaneous interpretation from English into Tigrinya during meetings, conferences, workshops, and live events.

2. Ensure message accuracy and completeness
Convey the speaker’s tone, intent, and technical meaning faithfully without omissions, additions, or distortions.

3. Prepare for assignments in advance
Review background materials, agendas, and terminology relevant to upcoming sessions to ensure high-quality interpretation.

4. Maintain confidentiality and professionalism
Handle sensitive information with discretion and adhere to professional interpreting ethics and standards at all times.

5. Collaborate with event teams and participants
Work closely with organizers, speakers, and technical staff to ensure smooth communication flow and address any linguistic or technical challenges during sessions.

Applicant’s Profile:

• Educational background
Bachelor’s degree in Translation, Interpretation, Linguistics, or a related field
(Qualifications near or similar to this are welcome).

• Language proficiency
Native or near-native fluency in Tigrinya and excellent command of English (both spoken and written).

• Proven professional experience in verbal interpretation or translation in a comparable setting (e.g. community information sessions, workshops, NGO or development sector engagements, diplomatic or institutional events)

• Technical interpreting skills
Strong ability to perform real-time (simultaneous) interpretation with accuracy, clarity, and speed, including familiarity with interpreting equipment or virtual platforms.

• Professional certification (preferred)
Certification from a recognized interpreting or translation body is an added advantage.

• Communication and interpersonal skills
Excellent listening, comprehension, and communication skills, with the ability to remain calm under pressure.

• Legal authorization to reside and work in Uganda, including a valid work permit or residency permit

• Availability on the confirmed assignment date: 18 June 2026

• Knowledge/proficiency in Amharic is an added advantage.

Required Application Documents

Applicants must submit the following standard documents required of a professional interpreter/translator:

• Curriculum Vitae (CV) – detailing relevant interpretation/translation experience, language pairs, and professional background

• Cover Letter / Expression of Interest – briefly explaining your suitability for this assignment and your experience with English-Tigrinya interpretation

• Copies of Relevant Certifications or Qualifications – e.g. interpreter training certificates, language proficiency certificates, or relevant academic credentials

• References or Proof of Prior Work – at least two (2) reference letters or verifiable references from organisations or individuals for whom you have provided comparable interpretation services, clearly specifying the language pair, context, and duration of the assignment

• Rate Card / Fee Proposal – a clearly stated expected rate or fee for the assignment (per hour or per session), inclusive of any applicable taxes. Please specify the currency.

• Copy of Valid Work Permit or Residency Permit – confirming your legal right to work in Uganda

Standort: Kampala oder Online
Arbeitsbeginn: Bei vorliegender Eignung kann eine Einstellung sofort erfolgen
Anstellungsart: Vollzeit (40 Stunden pro Woche) und Unbefristet (Teilzeit- und Honorarverträge sind möglich).

Wir suchen derzeit Lehrer, die qualifiziert sind, die Niveaustufen A1 bis C1 zu unterrichten, entweder persönlich oder online. Die Stellen beinhalten ein konkurrenzfähiges Gehalt, Krankenversicherung, Fortbildungsmöglichkeiten vor Ort und in Deutschland sowie Anschluss an das Netzwerk des Goethe Instituts.
