Strengthening Community Libraries: GZK and COLAU Partner to Train Librarians in Modern Library Skills
Home »
The Goethe-Zentrum Kampala (GZK) / Ugandan German Cultural Society Library , in partnership with the Community Libraries Association of Uganda (COLAU), successfully concluded a four-day Library Capacity Building Workshop designed to equip community librarians with essential skills in collection development, book processing, library automation and social media management.

The workshop, held from 14-17 October 2025, brought together community librarians from different parts of the country for a hands-on training experience. Many of them face challenges such as limited resources, organized collections and minimal digital presence. The goal therefore was to strengthen their individual and collective capacities as workers who play a crucial role in promoting literacy, lifelong learning, and access to information at the grassroots level.
Empowering Librarians with Modern Skills
Through out the week, participants engaged in interactive sessions covering a range of core areas :
Collection Development : Building Relevant and Inclusive Library Collections
Collection development refers to the process of selecting, evaluating, and maintaining library materials—both print and digital—to ensure that the library’s resources meet the needs and interests of its community. For community libraries, this process goes beyond simply acquiring books; it involves understanding what readers value, promoting diversity of voices, and making strategic decisions within limited budgets.
Librarians explored strategies for building inclusive and responsive library collections that meet the diverse needs of their communities. Moderated by the facilitator, discussions focused on identifying user interests, selecting relevant print and digital materials, and maintaining balanced collections within limited budgets.

Book processing : Organising and Preparing Library Materials
Book processing involves the steps taken to prepare books for use and circulation from cataloguing and classification to labeling and shelving. It ensures that materials are easy to locate, track and maintain within the library.
Hands-on sessions allowed participants to gain practical experience in book classification, cataloguing, labeling and shelving standards. The goal was to promote consistency and efficiency in managing physical collections.
Library Automation : Integrating Digital Tools for Efficiency
Library automation uses technology to manage library operations such as cataloguing, circulation, and information retrieval. It helps librarians save time, reduce errors, and improve access to information.
With the growing importance of digital tools, participants discussed the relevance of automation and whether it best fits their institutions. They were further introduced to practical methods of automating library processes, with emphasis on open-source Integrated Library Systems (ILS) to enhance cataloguing, circulation, and information management.

Social Media for Libraries: Expanding Community Engagement
Social media offers libraries powerful ways to connect with their communities, promote reading, and share resources beyond physical spaces. It helps librarians reach new audiences and showcase the library’s impact.
Participants learned how to leverage platforms such as X, TikTok and Instagram to promote programs, share success stories, and engage readers. The session encouraged librarians to view social media as an essential tool for advocacy, visibility, and community interaction in addition to using digital communication as an extension of library outreach.
Impact and Reflections

The workshop provided a valuable platform for learning, networking, and collaboration among community librarians. Participants shared insights, exchanged ideas, and built connections that will continue to strengthen their work beyond the training.
“The workshop gave me practical skills I can apply immediately—from organizing our collection to promoting our library online. I now feel equipped to make our library more vibrant and accessible,” shared one participant.
At the closing session, representatives from GZK and COLAU commended the enthusiasm and commitment shown by participants. They reaffirmed their dedication to continued professional development for community librarians, emphasizing that strong libraries are built by empowered librarians and engaged communities.
